Protection for longer equipment life
Shell Rimula oils are ready for action when you need them. As conditions in the engine change, Shell Rimula oils adapt physically and chemically to protect and help keep your vehicle running, even in some of the most challenging circumstances.
Investing in your truck means investing in your business.
How the Energised Protection of Shell Rimula oil works
Shell Rimula provides protection in critical areas - the areas that threaten engines most:
- Acid control – well-proven performance additives help to protect against corrosion from acids formed as fuel burns.
- Deposit control – helps to keep the engine clean for consistent performance and long life.
- Wear control – keeps moving metal engine surfaces apart for long engine life.
1. Acid control
Acids formed when diesel fuel is burned can escape into your oil, where they corrode parts of your engine, such as the bearings pictured here. Shell Rimula oils contain powerful neutralising agents designed to protect the engine from attack.
Acid attack on bearings causes engine failures. Oil neutralises exhaust-gas acids as they flow past the piston and rings.
2. Deposit control
A build-up of excessive piston deposits can result in ring sticking and abrasion, and cylinder wear. This shortens engine life and increases oil consumption. Shell Rimula Energised Protection oils contain active molecules that block or carry away the particles that can cause deposits.
A vital function of an oil is to keep moving metal surfaces separated. Failure can result in ‘hot spots’ and wear.
3. Wear control
Shell Rimula oils contain molecules that transform into protective films to keep metal surfaces apart, helping to prevent wear.

Increased wear protection
The difference on engine wear protection outlined when comparing Shell 10W-40 with Shell 15W-40 oil.
Investing in high quality oils minimises wear, helping to save on maintenance costs.
Wear protection is particularly critical at high-pressure contact points, such as in the engine valve train and gearbox. Using low quality oils can be a false economy. They may fail to keep components apart, which can cause hot spots, excessive wear and high maintenance costs.
Shell Rimula R3 X 15W-40, for example, can deliver up to 35% less engine wear (in on-road heavy-duty testing vs API CG-4 oils).
Synthetic technology oils such as Shell Rimula R5 E have enhanced flow properties compared to standard SAE 15W-40 oils, allowing them to reach the critical bearings up to 25% faster under mild freezing conditions and giving extra protection at temperatures where conventional oils may fail to pump.
Better emission control
Shell Rimula R4 L provides lower "SAPS" for reduced exhaust system impact
Using a low emission oil is not just better for the environment but also improves fuel efficiency.
Protecting the performance of your exhaust emissions control systems is not only important to ensure that your vehicle complies with legislative requirements, but also helps it to run more efficiently. Using an oil with a low "SAPS" technology, is not just better for the environment but also helps improve fuel efficiency. For example, blocked diesel particulate filters (DPF) can actually increase fuel consumption.
Shell Rimula R6 LME greatly reduces "SAPS" for enhanced catalyst/filter compatability when comparing OEM limits and other competitors
With Shell Rimula heavy-duty diesel engine oils, the letter ‘L’ on the label stands for ‘Low emissions’ – as in Shell Rimula R4 L and Shell Rimula R6 LME. These are Low-SAPS oils, formulated with reduced levels of ash, sulphur and phosphorous to help maintain the efficiency of the latest and future vehicle technologies.
